The Anclote River is a short river that winds around and empties into the Gulf of Mexico at Tarpon Springs, a famous tourist destination that was once the site of a thriving sponge fishery. The sponges are gone, except from the multitude of shops. In the Tarpon Springs area there are roads, shops, restaurants named “Anclote” as well as a skinny island that is a “key”. Anclote Key can only be reached by boat, and 4 of us ladies decided to make a day trip out to the island to see what was there. A famous lighthouse, shells, white sand beaches and unbelievable flocks of birds were all there to delight us for a memorable day trip. My painting illustrates 3 of us (I was the picture taker so I’m not in the painting), and I was lucky to shoot enough photos of that scene to be able to combine 3 or 4 photographs into the image you see in my pastel.
