I was not sure when I did this painting until I did an online search for my Grandmother’s death record and found that she died on April 17, 1966, and I always thought it was done in 1964, which is probably about right. I was finishing up at the Art Students’ League in 1964 and painting all the time.Very few early works of mine survived my purges of horrible work but I must have kept this one out of my love for this wonderful lady. I would not be the artist I am today without her support and encouragement. She paid for my art school classes and supplies and made sure I had crayons and paper as far back as my memory goes, toddler years as I recall. She is looking out the window at my parents’ summer cottage at Mason’s Island, near Mystic, Connecticut where she came to visit every summer. Their house was on a fresh water lake on the Island and Fisher’s Island sound can be seen in the background through a gap in the trees.
