THEME AND VARIATIONS
Acrylic on Canvas 36 x 47 2007 $800
I actually loved doing this painting! It was worked out years before on a scrap of paper that I dragged with me to Florida. Some painter’s tape and acrylic paint was all I needed to get it settled.
Theme and Variations is exactly what it says; a theme or melody, followed by a series of variations on that theme involving changes in tempo, key, rhythm, and melody. Many composers used this device, among them Haydn, Bach, Beethoven, Handel, Schubert, Chopin and Britten. What comes to my mind immediately is Brahms “Variations on a Theme By Hayden”. What incredible music!
