Those pink and purple clouds are so beautiful. Looking out to sea I imagine that I can see all the way across the Gulf of Mexico to the Texas coast. Early morning ramblings on the beach inspire strange thoughts and magical hallucinations.

This painting was done in my studio from a photograph I took at Madeira Beach, which is on the Gulf of Mexico side of the state. The beach at sunrise is truly a magical place, filled with both joy and mystery. As a child I was an avid shell collector and I lived for spring vacation and our annual trip to Sanibel Island. I would be on the beach before the sun was up every morning.
PURPLE MORNING MAJESTY

The Dawn Series was done for a show in a local gallery that was called a Square Foot Show. The idea was that you had to buy the canvas from the gallery and create your painting on it. Every painting was exactly the same size. It was a terrific show! These four paintings are among my favorites. Generally I don’t like to paint to a theme because they often become white elephants…or orphans, but these small canvases work well together and I wanted to show them off again, even though they are in a Corporate Collection in Tampa.

I took this picture one morning as the sun was just coming up in the eastern sky. I am an early morning person and often I can manage to get out with my camera, but sometimes I am still in my pajamas when I do it!
